Review of La Sportiva Cyklon Cross GTX

Screaming barfies for runners is a real thing – pipe down ice climbers and skiers, it’s the runners turn to talk about this pain. Last Winter my tootsies really suffered running in the snow, sideways rivers falling from the sky, and the lower than usual Squamish Winter temps. Ok, I admit my South West UK beach feet might not be hardened to the Canadian Winters, but damn was I pleased when I got my feet into this beautiful shoe. Hello La Sportiva Cyklon Cross GTX, the new apple of my wintery eye.

Imagine a Winter running technical trail shoe, meets cozy (but not sweat drenched) nimble trail party slipper, with a perfect fitting two-way stretch mesh gaiter; appropriate for all your winter training, run/hike adventures and for any of you hard core competitive winter runners. Way cheaper than a sled and skis; this shoe looks winter in the eye and says “Step aside, I’m going for a run!”

Honestly, I was a little skeptical about a few things, especially the BOA Fit system - but it has really delivered. It’s ultra-lightweight and very impressive. You can control and adjust the fit of the shoe, with one quick click and twist of the dial and you feel secure from heel through to toes. The waterproof GORE-TEX membrane has an awesome flex construction to it, so where a GORE-TEX trail shoe can sometimes feel slightly stiffer, this shoe even with a gaiter built in, feels neither stiff nor cumbersome. I run hot (and get feet screaming barfies), so I was curious about how dry I’d stay on the inside. Bone dry is the answer. The GORE-TEX membrane is waterproof AND breathable. That’s right my friends, you can apparently have both of these things and you can also look like you’re off for a surf in your wetsuit booties, while also going for a cross country ski, when in fact you’re going for a run! Confusing, but in a fun and fast looking kind of way. You don’t have to move fast though, because this beauty will keep you dry and warm even on the slower days.

Did I even mention the TPU toecap for all you large rock kickers and reflective detailing in the low winter light?! Unlike my ability to write reviews, the Cyklon offers you fantastic stability with the medial and lateral Midsole stabilizer inserts. So, you’ll be cruising even on the most rugged terrain. The FriXion White sole gives you full confidence in the shoes super sticky traction system, the lug is meaty but still allows you to perch on wet granite.

So, whether you’re in deeper snow, compact slipperiness, ice and just that usual wet mud stuff, there’s no messing around. Rip up the ups and tear down the downs, or just feel warm, dry and safe with a cuppa in your to go Cyklon mug. The best of both worlds! Come try this shoe on and then we can be all matchy. I doubt you’ll be disappointed, it’s my Winter winner!
